Day 9 – Inveraray to South Laggan

Cruachan Dam in the distance

I don’t normally look forward to cycling in the roads on Mull that I cover often and know well, but I was very much looking forward to cycling the road today from Inveraray. The stay in the Inveraray Inn was very hot, but a hearty fish breakfast was going to set me in good stead!
Leaving Inveraray , we started with an 8 mile climb. A road I was once very familiar with and I was surprised at the ease we got up it. Not as steep as I remember but long enough!
The descent and run down to Loch Awe was beautiful, the day was calm and hot and the loch looked shiny! Our first wee water stop was at Kilchurn Castle after 15 miles.

Then we had about 20 miles to get to the other side of the Connel Bridge.

A road that I drive often, seeing it from the bike was a new experience and it was not too busy which was a bonus.
Aileen was todays visitor! We had our main morning stop here and as she lives close by to the airport she popped over for a visit!

After an extended break, we headed for Duror for lunch to the village hall there. We were catered for by a lovely local lady who served up soup , sandwiches and strawberries and ice cream!

Full to the brim again we set off! The temperature was easy 30 degrees and we were grateful for the breeze when we were going.

The mountains of Mull in the distance!

The cycle path along this road is very nice as I have been on it before , but it switches back and forth a lot across the road and when you wear clip ins this is a bit of a pain all the stopping and starting. I stayed off it for a while but when the traffic started to be busy at Ballachullish we headed on to it for safety.

We passed the lovely sight of the small Corran ferry, people from Mull will be delighted it’s back in action. After this the cycle track ended and the day became marred by inpatient and aggressive drivers. I am a conscientious cyclist and I hate holding up vehicles but the road from Ardgour is also difficult to overtake. I haven’t experienced such aggressive attitudes, I must have been shouted at about 10 times by drivers, calling me an a***hole, telling me to get to f**k off the road and preprint their horns. As a relatively local person to the area it’s pretty embarrassing that all my cycle group have experienced the worst here in Scotland!!

Loch Lochy
Getting to the end of the day!

Anyways, I shan’t let that spoil a nice day! We had our last stop just near Morrisons in Fort William , then we had a dash to our hostel accommodation tonight! We are staying in South Laggan in the Great Glen Hostel, just near Loch Lochy. Pretty stunning and midgy, but we can’t have it all.
All in all, 95 more miles down today!
Some lovely sights today and am still feeling positive! The bum is ok, it’s definitely looking forward to the end! My cyclists tan is doing well and I have been getting a bit of burn too- could you believe I didn’t bring enough sun tan lotion and have been rationing!

Cyclists tan!

A relatively easy day tomorrow, a mere 60 miles!! But I shall take it and recharge my batteries for the penultimate day on Friday which will be our longest day!

The end is getting nearer!
