Day 1- Lands End to Liskeard

Alarm went off at 6.30, breakfast at 7am, bikes and bags loaded in the van by 8am and our lifts left at 8.30am!

Clockwork!!

We arrived by taxi to Lands End this morning at 9am, with a view to start cycling by 9.30. We did the obligatory photo shoot, which we managed for free !(there is normally someone in the wee booth ready to charge you a fortune for the privilege).

It was blowing a hoolie! Winds were gusting up to 25mph and they were coming from the East, so a nice head wind for us! It was pretty blustery and the hills were rolling and it felt good to be back on the bike after almost a week! I rested my whole body from the bike after Wednesday last week! The group of 11 we are in consists of 8 men and 3 ladies. Since I am built for stamina and not speed, I was happy to watch the majority of the blokes race off in to the distance. Our pace was fairly swift and consistent and we were busy trying not to go too fast and wear ourselves out, bearing in mind this is day 1/12!

Our first stop for coffee was at 23 miles. Phil, one of our leaders was in the van and had set up a lovely tea table for us in a village green.

The scenery has been spectacular, Mountbay was the prettiest town today and I would like to go back but not on a bike. Truro was lovely and the only city in Cornwall, but St Astell had the worst traffic and roadworks . Fairly consistent today was traffic, busy all the way and many don’t slow for cyclists. The sun and the hills were pretty consistent too!

Lunch stop was a picnic lunch in the beer garden of the Hawkin arms in Probus and was very welcomed at 45 miles, and we had a water stop at Lost Withiel at 62 miles. We had slightly bigger hills this afternoon, and the steepest was in there right at the end as we got to Liskeard. A good day in the saddle and the body is fine, just going to nurse my lady bits and head for a slap up dinner in the Premier Inn! I might even have a pint!
